Airavatesvara temple in Darasuram dating back to second half of the twelfth century is one of the four biggest temples erected by the Chola dynasty.The other three templare are in Tanjore, Gangaikondacolapuram and Tribhuvanam.

The monument is know for its rich architecture and great decorative wealth.It has been registered in the world heritage list of the UNESCO in 2004.Darasuram is situated about five km south of Kumbhakonam, in the Tanjavur district of Tamil Nadu.It is belived that it was Rājarāja II who reigned from 1146 to 1173 constructed this temple.

The Airāvateśvara is generally considered as one of the four great Cōḻa temples because of its imposing dimensions and iconographic beauty.
