DSC04225Silappadikaram, one the greatest Tamil epics depicts the story of Kannagi and Kovalan. The epic revolves around Kannagi, who lost her husband to a miscarriage of justice at the court of the Pandya king and she destroys the city of Madurai as a revenge for the death of her husband. Kannagi was living with Kovalan in Poompuhar, the capital of Cholas. Her life was devastated after Kovalan begins a relationship with an unchaste woman Madhavi in Madurai, the capital of Pandyas. Kovalan decided to sell the anklet of Kannagi to start a business, but was beheaded as he was suspected of stealing it from the queen.
